Single or Dual? Solar Powered or AC?
When choosing your swing gate opener kit, it's important to choose the kind of opener that's right for your gate whether that's a single actuator opener for smaller gates or a dual for larger ones. Are you looking for an eco-friendlier install with a solar powered option? These kinds of things are important to know before purchasing your gate opener kit as while they may look similar, they both install and perform quite differently.
The Ranger 500 actuators support up to 13' gates up to 400lbs each, so if you have a single gate that fits these specifications, we recommend getting a single swing gate opener as a dual opener would be overkill. For larger, double gates that are up to 26' in length total (13' per side) and up to 800lbs (400lbs per side) we'd recommend a double gate opener to ensure that your actuators are in sync and have enough power to open your gates.
As for choosing between the AC or the Solar kits, functionally they will operate the same with the same opening speed, gate leaf weights and maximum lengths, etc. Where it really counts is if you're in an area where a solar panel is able to receive consistent sunlight and/or grid power is unavailable. If you don't have a great place to put your solar panel to power your gate operator, we recommend sticking with the AC powered units. In short:
- Single Gates: one panel, one actuator, simpler install
- Dual Gates: two panels that open from a center point, requires Gate 2 cable and hardware
- Both configurations use the same control board and LCR receiver system
- Solar vs. AC: Solar is ideal where grid power is unavailable; AC is preferred for high-cycle or permanent power applications
