How to Measure Solar Panel Output (Barrel Plug)
If your solar-powered gate opener is sluggish or the battery keeps dying, the panel may not be charging properly. This guide is for panels that connect to the system with a DC barrel plug. You will need a digital multimeter and direct sunlight.
Steps
- Unplug the barrel plug from the charge controller or power input.
- Set your multimeter to DC Volts.
- Touch the red probe to the center pin of the barrel plug (positive).
- Touch the black probe to the outer metal barrel (negative).
- Read the display in peak sun (midday, no shade). The expected reading is approximately 20-22 volts DC.
What the Reading Means
| Reading | What It Means |
|---|---|
| ~20-22 VDC | Panel is working. Check the battery or charge controller next. |
| 0-10 VDC | Panel is shaded, dirty, or failing. Clean it and retest in full sun. |
| No reading | Check for damaged cable, plug, or spade terminal connections. |
Pro Tip: If probing the barrel plug is awkward, disconnect the cable at the spade terminals on the panel and measure there instead. The voltage reading will be the same.
Quick Tips
- Test during peak sun hours (10 AM-2 PM) for the most accurate reading.
- Even a small shadow on the panel can drop the voltage significantly.
- Both the 10W and 20W panels have the same approximate open-circuit voltage (~22 VDC), though the 20W panel produces more current.
