How to Measure DC Adapter Output
If your gate opener is sluggish or not working, the DC adapter may not be delivering enough power. A quick voltage check will tell you if the adapter is the problem. You will need a digital multimeter to help figure it out.

Steps
- Disconnect the adapter from the charge controller.
- Set your multimeter to DC Volts (DCV).
- Insert the multimeter probes into the adapter plug or touch the wire leads.
- Plug the adapter into the wall outlet.
- Read the display. If you're using the 520009 (current DC Adapter), it should read approximately 20 Volts DC. If you're using the 520004 (older AC Transformer), it should read approximately 18 Volts AC (set meter to ACV).
If the reading is zero or far below the rating, replace the adapter. Important: The USAutomatic multi-stage charge controller (520001) does not output voltage when disconnected from the battery, so you cannot test the controller itself without a battery connected. Always test the adapter separately from the controller.
What the Reading Means
| Reading | What to Do |
|---|---|
| ~20 VDC | Adapter is good. Check the battery or charge controller next. |
| 0 V or very low | Adapter is dead. Replace with 520009. |
| Gate still runs slow | Test the battery under load or inspect your solar panel if applicable. |
