How to Measure Charging Current from the Battery Controller

If your battery never seems to reach a full charge, the solar panel or DC adapter may not be delivering enough current into the controller. A quick test tells you if power is actually flowing. You will need a digital multimeter.

Steps

  1. Disconnect the power source (solar panel or DC adapter) from the controller's input.
  2. Set the multimeter to DC Amps. Use the 10A setting if your meter has one.
  3. Connect the multimeter in series; red probe to the positive (+) lead from the solar panel or DC adapter and the black probe to the positive (+) input on the controller.
  4. Read the display after a few seconds.

Note: Never put the multimeter in parallel on an amps setting. Always break the circuit and place the meter in series to avoid blowing the fuse.

Expected Readings

DC Adapter (520009) Up to 1.2 A max

What the Reading Means

Result Likely Cause
Normal current Power source is good. Check the battery voltage or battery condition next.
Zero/very low For solar: no sun, dirty panel, or bad cable. For AC adapter: failed transformer or loose plug.
Flashing symbol on controller LCD Battery is already full/in float charge mode

The controller LCD shows a charging symbol when power is flowing. A steady symbol means it is charging; a flashing symbol means it is fully charged.
