How to Install a Second Battery in a Premium Metal Wireless Keypad

The Premium Metal Wireless Keypad (Part #050551) comes with one CR123A battery installed, which typically lasts around 24 months. The keypad has a second battery terminal on the circuit board that can be activated to add a second CR123A battery, extending the overall battery life to around 48 months. This requires removing a knock-out tab from the circuit board before the second battery can be seated properly.

What You Need

• The included key to remove the keypad from its housing (CH751)
• A small Phillips head screwdriver
• A small flat-head screwdriver
• One new CR123A battery

Step 1: Remove and Open the Keypad

1. Use the included key to unlock the keypad.
2. Lift the keypad up and away from the back plate to remove it.
3. Loosen the four Phillips head screws and remove the internal back plate.

Step 2: Remove the Optional Battery Knock-Out

1. Remove the currently installed battery.
2. Locate the section of the circuit board labeled "Optional battery CR123A".
3. Use the flat-head screwdriver to remove the knock-out tab and the small tabs attaching it to the rest of the board. All tabs must be fully removed. If the small tabs are left in place, the battery will not sit securely and may fall out.

Step 3: Install Both Batteries

Insert both CR123A batteries into the two battery terminals, making sure each one is oriented correctly and seated firmly.

Step 4: Reassemble and Remount the Keypad

1. Set the internal back plate back into place and secure it with the four Phillips head screws. Do not over-tighten.
2. Set the keypad back into the housing.
3. Lock the keypad into place with the included key.

Troubleshooting

One of the batteries keeps falling out after reassembly.

The knock-out tab or its small retaining tabs were likely not fully removed. Open the keypad again and check that all tabs are completely cleared from the optional battery terminal. The battery will not stay seated if any part of the knock-out is still attached to the board.

The keypad does not power on after installing both batteries.

Check that both batteries are seated correctly with the proper polarity. Remove and reinstall them if needed. If only one battery is making contact, the keypad may still power on but could behave inconsistently. Make sure both terminals are fully engaged.
