How to Hold the Gate Open Using a Premium Metal Wireless Keypad

This article covers how to set up a hold open (latch) code on the Premium Metal Wireless Keypad (Part #050551). The hold open feature keeps your gate open past its auto-close timer. Once the latch code is entered, the gate opens and stays open until you enter the same code a second time. At that point, the auto-close timer resumes and the gate closes normally. You can also enter your regular access code after the latch code to close the gate immediately.

This feature requires three steps: programming a new hold open access code on the keypad, setting the receiver's P2 relay to latch mode, and pairing that code to P2 on the receiver. Complete all three steps before testing.

Note: The hold open feature only works on systems using an automatic close timer. If your gate opener's auto-close timer is turned off, the gate already stays open after each use and this setup is not needed.

Step 1: Program a Hold Open Access Code on the Keypad

The hold open code needs to be programmed on a different channel from your regular gate code. When prompted to select a relay during programming, choose channel 2 (P2). Use a code that is different from your everyday access code so you do not accidentally trigger hold open mode.

Work through the steps below quickly. If you wait too long between key presses, the keypad will exit programming mode and you will need to start over. Writing down the sequence before you begin is a good idea.

1. Enter your Master Password (factory default is 11111), then press 9. You should hear two short beeps.
2. Enter your new hold open access code, then press 9. For example: 2468#, then 9.
3. Re-enter the same hold open code, then press 2 to assign it to P2 (channel 2). You should hear two short beeps confirming the code is saved.

If you hear one long beep at any point, the keypad did not accept the entry. Check that your Master Password is correct and that you are pressing keys quickly enough, then start over from Step 1.

Step 2: Enable Latch Mode on P2

By default, the P2 relay on the receiver sends a brief momentary pulse. For hold open to work, you need to switch P2 to latch mode so it stays active until triggered again. Follow the steps below at the receiver inside your gate control box.

1. Press and hold the P2 button on the receiver. The green LED should turn on solid. Keep holding P2.
2. While the green LED is solid, release P2 and immediately tap P1. The green LED should begin flashing rapidly. If the LED turns off before you press P1, try again from the beginning.
3. To confirm P2 is now in latch mode, press and hold P2 again. The green LED should flash. If it turns on solid instead, latch mode was not set. Repeat Steps 1 and 2.

Step 3: Pair the Hold Open Code to P2 on the Receiver

Now you need to teach the receiver to recognize the new hold open code and associate it with P2. You will need to be at the receiver to complete this step.

1. On the keypad, enter your hold open access code and hold down the last digit (for example: enter 2468 and hold the # key). The keypad's light will flash while the last key is held.
2. While holding the last digit on the keypad, press and hold the P2 button on the receiver. Hold both until the receiver clicks and the gate moves to the open position. Then release both buttons.
3. Test the setup: enter the latch code once. The gate should open and stay open past its normal auto-close time. Enter the same code again. The auto-close timer should resume and the gate should close.

Troubleshooting

The keypad exited programming mode before I finished.

The keypad has a short timeout between key presses. If it exits programming mode mid-sequence, start over from Step 1 of the programming process. Write down the full sequence first so you can move through it quickly without pausing.

I hear one long beep when programming the access code.

A long beep means the keypad did not accept the entry. The most common cause is an incorrect Master Password. Confirm you are using the right password (factory default is 11111) and try again. If you have changed the Master Password and no longer know it, use the PUK code printed on the label inside the battery compartment to reset it.

The gate closes after the hold open code is entered.

P2 on the receiver may not be set to latch mode. Repeat Step 2 above. When latch mode is active, the green LED will flash when you press and hold P2. If the LED turns on solid instead, latch mode is not enabled.

The hold open code does not trigger the gate at all.

The code may not be paired to the receiver yet, or it may have been paired to P1 instead of P2. Repeat Step 3 to re-pair the code, making sure you are pressing and holding the P2 button on the receiver (not P1). Also confirm the receiver has power and that the wiring connections to your gate operator are secure.

The gate does not close when I enter the latch code a second time.

If the gate does not respond to the second entry of the latch code, the receiver may not have registered latch mode correctly. Go back through Step 2 and confirm the green LED is flashing (not solid) after you complete the sequence. A solid green LED on the P2 hold check means latch mode is still not set.
