How to Change the Security Code on a Basic Wireless Keypad

Your USAutomatic basic wireless keypad is programmed with a default factory Security Code that controls the radio frequency signature. Because every keypad ships with the same default setting, changing this code is an essential step to prevent your keypad from interfering with or being triggered by neighboring USAutomatic devices. Unlike your Access Code or your Master Password, the Security Code acts like a virtual set of dip switches. It tells your receiver exactly which keypad it should listen to.

What Is the Security Code?

The basic wireless keypad does not have physical dip switches inside. Instead, it uses a virtual dip-switch with nine 3-position switches. The factory default places all nine switches in the center position. To keep your property secure and avoid cross-traffic with nearby systems, you should move these virtual switches into a unique, random pattern.

Before You Begin

  • Make sure you know your current Master Password
  • The keypad should have a fresh Lithium CR123A battery installed.
  • Have a pen and paper ready to record your new Security Code pattern.
  • If you have not changed your Master Password from the factory default, we strongly recommend doing that first.

Changing the Security Code

Step 1: Design Your Pattern

The nine virtual switches can each be set to three possible positions:

  • 0 (zero)
  • # (pound)
  • * (star)

Choose a random position for each of the nine switches and write it down. Store this record in a safe place. You will need it if you ever add a new keypad or reprogram your existing one. Here is an example pattern:

Step 2: Enter Programming Mode

  1. Enter your Master Password
  2. Press 6
  3. If you hear two short beeps, you are in programming mode. If you hear one long beep, start over at Step 1

Step 3: Input Your New Security Code

  1. Enter your new pattern one switch at a time. Using the example above, you would type: 1#, 20, 3*, 4*, 5#, 6*, 7#, 80, 9*
  2. After each switch/position combination, you should hear two short beeps confirming that the digit pair was accepted

Step 4: Save and Exit

  1. Press # (pound)
  2. Press 6 again
  3. If you hear two short beeps, your new Security Code is saved. If you hear one long beep, start over from Step 1

What to Do Next

After changing the Security Code, you must re-establish communication between the keypad and the receiver using the new code:

  1. If your keypad suddenly stops working after a battery replacement or if a neighbor installs the same model, resetting the Security Code is usually the fix
  2. Enter the Access Code for Relay 1 and continue holding the last key entered (you will see the red light blinking on the keypad)
  3. Press the P1 (Learn) button on the receiver until the LD (green) light comes on and the relay clicks.
  4. Repeat for Relay 2 using P2 if needed.
